La Porta Romana, Firenze, 2014

Drawings

My continued visits to Italy inspired the four drawings representing the undulating hills of the Tuscan countryside, as well as the meandering streets and architecture of Florence.

This ink and watercolor drawing “For Helene (1)” is an interpretation of the late Helene Brandt’s “Arial Treepod”; while turned upside down, the spirit of her rooted form is intact.

Brandt’s “Birth of Venus”, 2010, which inspired “For Helene (2)” was part of the “Adaptations” exhibition I produced at Empire State College, spring, 2013. Helene will always be a dear friend, colleague, and inspiration. We were planning an exhibition of her hybrid biomorphic sculpture and my drawn responses, before her untimely death on August 27, 2013.
