“Arcitectonica” is a portfolio comprised of digital collages that were created from watercolors that were cut then “spliced” together to form a whole new analog image. Some have been layered with drawn elements, rescanned, then printed again. This process gave me a sense of haptic control over the digital output, while achieving surprising new images in a final printed form.
The portfolio was created over two different trips to Florence and the more rural Tuscan landscapes of Italy, with the idea that my experience of the dynamic landscapes in various locations could merge into a cubistic visual memory. Working in this style allowed me the freedom to engage conceptually with multiple views of time and space in this sublime landscape.
The color is both naturalistic and improvised, providing a vibrant representation of my feelings about the undulating hills, the tapestry of farmlands, and the interaction of architectural elements ranging from traditional farmhouses to historic churches.
The overall theme of the portfolio has resulted in three sub-series: Arcitectonica (the core of the series made in two sizes), Schemata (which tended to be larger more spatial images, and some titles more germane to their location (Tuscan Vista, Lucca Vista, et al).
